Ilteris's motivation is a tyranny born of love: to protect his brother Aral from the death that is the price of Vahdet. If humanity achieves enlightenment, the Root-Language will consume Aral. So Ilteris holds the world in an iron-fisted dungeon of ignorance — appearing as a tyrant while living the endless sacrifice of an elder brother. His tragedy: his mercy has transformed into cruelty toward the world.

A tragic elder brother who locked humanity in a dungeon of ignorance to protect the world from its own hubris.
